RYA Courses
The Rya Level 1 course is a two-day introduction to sailing for novices. At the end of the two days, you will have a basic understanding of keel-boat sailing. Some of the areas covered are sailing across the wind, up wind and down wind, what some of the bits of rope do. With a little bit of theory to give some background knowledge and how to tie a few knots, it’s a great foundation to base all your future sailing on. Previous experience none.
The Rya Level 2 course is a two-day consolidation for people who have completed level 1. At the end of the course, you will be able to sail a keelboat in light winds without an instructor onboard. Some of the areas covered are points of sail, anchoring, how a sail works, some more useful knots and handling the boat under engine power. Previous experience usually completion of level 1 but for those who have sailing experience this can be sidestepped, if this is your situation please let me know and we can discuss options.
The level two course can be combined with the level 1 to form a 5-day course. You start from scratch and work through the RYA level 1 and 2 courses, to get a good foundation in keelboat sailing.
The RYA Level 3 is a two-day course which bridges the gap between Level 2 and Seamanship skills. It looks at improving your Level 2 skills and boat handling and gives a taster of the more advanced courses that you can go on to do. Better Sailing allows for the opportunity to consolidate and put into practice sailing techniques and experience some of the activities the advanced modules have to offer. Whilst improving confidence for independent sailing by supporting development of improved boat handling and performance. Previous experience usually completion of level 2 but for those who have significant sailing experience this can be sidestepped, if this is your situation please let me know and we can discuss options.
The RYA Seamanship skills course is a two-day which will give you the opportunity to build on the skills gained on the level 3 course. On successful completion of this course, you will be capable of safely handling a keelboat in a seaman like manner and making seamanship decisions in moderate conditions. You will be dealing with a man overboard situation, effectively reefing afloat, sailing backwards, anchoring and dealing with adverse situations. This is all aimed at building your confidence to deal with problems you may encounter whilst sailing. Previous experience usually completion of level 3 but for those who have considerable amount of sailing experience this can be sidestepped, if this is your situation please let me know and we can discuss options.
